The XX Brazilian Congress of Sports Science and VII International Congress of Sports Science will take place on September 17th to 21st in Campus Samambaia, Universidade Federal de Goiás in Goiânia / GO. For this edition of the event, we chose the image of the blooming yellow ipê (Tabebuia ochracea) that is in bloom during the dry period of September in the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) biome. The extended event schedule is structured around the following theme: "Democracy and Emancipation: Challenges for Physical Education and Sports Science in Latin America."
On the theme adopted for the event:
According to diagnosis by sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, one of the effects/defects of the current globalization is the radical separation between capital and politics. Similarly, there is the complete submission of politics, which is still distinctively local, to the rules of an economy with extraterritorial powers. As a result, the pressures of the neoliberal market are replacing political law at the same time that the public sphere is being overrun (and unruled) by the private sphere. It is in this context in which the normative essence of democratic institutional order is depleted that Bauman encourages us to build a new public Emancipation agenda to contain the advance of those effects/defects of Latin America globalization, debating over the challenges they present to Physical Education and Sports Sciences. Such challenges are embodied, for example, in proposals such as the Management of Social Organizations in health and education, the militarization of public schools, disqualification and streamlining of knowledge production, and several threats to constitutional rights of access to health, education, sport, and leisure. Moreover, at this time the field is called upon reflection on the ongoing transformations in the curricula of basic education, on national guidelines on physical education, and on graduate paths indicated by CAPES policies and of Area 21. These specific issues, which are also permeated by the general political situation, deserve contextualized reflections by current political agendas in Latin America.
